Zinc powder

The zinc used in button batteries and other silver oxide batteries is easily corroded by alkali solutions, which causes reduced capacity and leaks. To prevent this, minute amounts of mercury and lead were in the past added as corrosion preventatives. However, as restrictions on harmful substances have been implemented around the world, demand has increased for silver oxide batteries that contain no mercury and lead, and more alkaline-manganese and other batteries have become mercury- and lead-free.

Akita Zinc Solutions Co., Ltd. uses a compound of zinc powder and a highly corrosion-resistant alloy and thoroughly controls its manufacturing processes. This has allowed it to build the world’s first mass production line for zinc powder for mercury-free silver oxide button batteries.
