POSAM consists of a palmtop PC (Windows95/98, Me, 2000, Xp, RS232C compatible) with "expert system" software for automatic mineral identification, a portable infrared spectroradiometer, and maintainance software.
POSAM can measure spectral reflectance in a short time using a multiband method.
The software can automatically identify about forty minerals such as clays, carbonates, sulfates, and so on. The spectral information about these minerals is stored in a database for mineral identification. These can be modified and deleted from the database as needed, and information about other minerals can be entered as required.
One of the advantages of POSAM is that samples can be measured without destruction directly in the field. Especially in the field, mineral identification using POSAM are objective, effective, and economical as shown in "APPLIED EXAMPLE OF POSAM".
POSAM is most suitable for mineral exploration, geothermal resources exploration, ground truth checking of remote sensing, borehole surveys for mineral and petroleum resources, alteration mineral studies, and so on.
